Phoronix: Bcachefs Fixes Pull Once Again Frustrates Linus Torvalds - Two Choices Offered

Linus Torvalds merged the newest round of fixes to the experimental Bcachefs file-system, but it's left Linux creator Linus Torvalds frustrated and he's presented two choices for the file-system moving forward due to the continued LKML drama...

Well, I wish / hope this can somehow land in a more win-win solution, but it seems like there's a ton of friction on this. I love BCacheFS and Kent, but I completely empathize with Linus here.

Wow another drama, actually they are both assholes that think they know better, the one that does not get his patches reviewed and the guy that is stubborn and threatens to remove the hole project is no better.

if he is going to continue to be a petulant child and a liability i don't know why he wouldn't remove it from the project. i don't see linus as being unreasonable at all. is he expected to just let kent disrupt the entire project indefinitely? how exactly is linus being an asshole here?

Linus has to protect the kernel from idiot developers. And Kent is actually acting like a total idiot. He had his fair share of helpful hints, advice and support. He ignored it all.

It is pretty obvious at this point that bcachefs' developer can not work with others on a respectful, dependable basis. Such people destroy projects. The only way forward is to remove them.

Yeah, based on this exchange and others, I don't think its possible to work with Kent Overstreet...

Last year he went straight to linus instead of following the procedure last year because he saw him higher in the pecking order, but it hinted that atleast he recognised that he would have to work with him. That no longer seems to be the case.

IMO Bcachefs should be removed from the mainline kernel for the next rc.

(I wonder what that would do for the funding he was alluding to)

That filesystem still has a long road to become something competitive, and the way the developer is constantly causing drama with the kernel developers does not really give me hope. A filesystem can't be a one-man show. At some point, companies will need to start showing an interest in it.

As one of the users that Kent talks about, Bcachefs being in or out of tree doesn't have that much of a bearing on whether we'll use the file system or not. I've used a certain out of tree file system, I don't believe I gotta mention its name, for around 8 years now. I just pick distributions with installers that make it easy to use that out of tree module, like I did when I used graphics cards that required out of tree modules and like I'll do going forward for Bcachefs if it gets kicked from mainline.

It really doesn't matter if something is mainline or not. What really matters is both how well something is supported by your favorite distribution and how easy or hard the developer makes it to use on different distributions.

Then Linus can just say no i wont pull them put them in next for testing.

There is two fundamental views clashing, Kent wants state of the art patches from his newest tree in the rc(ah i just fixed this yesterday can you pull it today), while Linus wants them to brew in the next tree for weeks so the automated testing etc. can get done, they are like cats and dogs.

But that does not give Linus the right to threaten (i´ll just axe bcachefs cause you piss me off), he has the right to just nak that pull but not the right to embress a developer that put so much thaught into a new filesystem that many pepole eagerly want to succeed.
