  • Is CCP open sourcing Eve Online?

I just ran across this today and I'm curious what other people think or know about it.

Well the technology maybe but they will still keep copyright over the majority of the assets so it's not like you could create an identical copy. However I do like the idea of an allegiance remake, that was brilliant when it came out.

How might open-sourcing CCP Games' Carbon Development Platform impact the future of MMO development, and what potential innovations or challenges do you foresee arising from this decision?

The implications of CCP open-sourcing part of their tech are fascinating. They may maintain ownership over the game's assets and fundamental IP, but releasing their development platform might spur innovation. The technology allowed independent developers and modders to build new tools, features, and spin-off games. A more involved and innovative community may lengthen Eve Online's lifetime. However, open-source contribution management and quality control may be difficult. What do you think this means for MMOs?

I can’t say for sure what CCP Games’ decision will be, but I see this as a potential idea. It would certainly be a stepping stone for the gaming platform to grow if they put in place adequate quality control policies.

Personally, I was quite pleased to play Vanguard; being able to influence EVE while playing an FPS game is great. I felt it was a fascinating read. And I'm looking forward to what Eve has in store next. The same was done once Star Wars Galaxies was shut down. You can still play it through SWGEmu, SWG Legends, and a variety of other platforms.
