Phoronix: Systemd Creator Lands At Microsoft

Yesterday's surprise was that Lennart Poettering quietly had left Red Hat following a decade and a half there leading PulseAudio among other projects and ultimately going on to start systemd that has fundamentally reshaped modern Linux distributions. It turns out he had joined Microsoft and continuing his work on systemd...

As someone who has managed to create/implement three distinct technologies that have each reshaped the linux stack, this gives Microsoft a lot of power. Lets hope he stays focussed on linux (which he may have set as a requirement in getting signed up) and not railroaded to something else.

Even if people dont like the stuff he has worked on the fact is avahi, pulseaudio and systemd each managed to win over the majority of linux developer mindshare quite successfully.

This comes as a surprise, indeed.

BTW, I've long felt Lennart's design philosophy was more in line with that of Microsoft's. Seems like a good fit, in those terms.

I have some vague recollection of seeing him mention certain MS Windows technologies, in his writings about systemd. As if he were trying to re-create them on Linux. I could just be imagining that, however.

He didn't win over anyone but RedHat, Debian caved on SystemD not because it was better but because there was more inertia behind it. Ubuntu gave up on upstart because Debian gave up. SystemD won the init system wars much like Biden won the 2020 presidential primaries in the USA, everyone else just gave up.

This must be part of a Microsoft plan to eat Linux...

Never been a better time to be transitioning all systems to OpenBSD and FreeBSD. Linux is not going in a good direction at all!
