    Jesus fucking Christ.
You're contesting that windoze default font rendering is way better suited to a vastly larger number of combinations of monitors/resolutions/fonts out there?

However I disagree with birdie's attempts to trying to emulate it though and prefer other means of getting Linux fonts look satisfactory (if I find myself on another system).

While stripping of previously existing features is generally not appreciated, I wonder how hard it can be to choose a different font that looks just fine on not-high-DPI screens. I for one had to choose a different terminal / editor fonts 3 or 4 times in the last 30 years, and I cannot remember that being any significant hardship.

there's a link if you haven't noticed - to a blog entry where the pango contributors discuss what exactly they are dropping and why.

this has been offered to birdie as a viable solution at more than one forum indeed. he seems to be pretty dismissive of these suggestions, preferring to vent his frustrations instead. Those probably aren't totally unsubstantiated alright but...

ClearType has always looked like ass, and it only got worse with newer Windows versions (though Vista was slightly acceptable). I always have to tune it for it not to get in my nerves.

Full hinting only looks good on CRTs. Can't even remember the last time I used one.

you clearly haven't seen how it looks then.
also windoze font rendering is not only about a certain hinting algo - I'd suppose there's much more work put into it than just that.
To make win fonts look, yeah nice on a wide range of devices/sizes/resolutions. It's hard you know.

OK, so HarfBuzz developers have clarified the situation and said the issue is with Pango. Matthias Clasen, a pango developer who dropped FreeType kerning hints and switched to HarfBuzz for this purpose, remains silent.

What do you expect him to answer?

There are no curved high-DPI monitors available in my home country. All 4K ones are 32 inch, which means only 140 DPI and too many pixels for Intel GT2 GPU.

why would you specifically want a curved one? what does it give besides a selling point?

also does your home country ban the import of say 27" 4k monitors?
