    Sorry for the ignorance, but what's the significance of this? Was L2TP not already in the kernel, because I've been using it in Fedora for ages? Does systemd now manage it in a different way, or does it add functionality that wasn't there previously?

    (not looking to restart a flame war, please don't, genuinely curious to what's being achieved here)

      You've likely used client software such as xl2tpd (through Networkmanager?) for setting up the connections. The kernel module contains the protocol code. Read the article for more information,

        Yes, I'm using NetworkManager with the L2TP module enabled. Looking it up now, I didn't know that NetworkManager and networkd were separate programs, I'd assumed that NetworkManager was basically a GUI front-end for the same thing.

        So this allows for L2TP tunnel configuration on instances running networkd instead of NetworkManager, I understand now.
