  • Seems donations to the FreeBSD Foundation is drying up

"I just looked up the financials of the FreeBSD Foundation.

In 2017 they had a fundraising goal of $1.25m. They didn't meet that goal - they hit a bit below 1.1m.

Still, in the first quarter of 2017, they managed to get 425K in contributions: https://web.archive.org/web/20180801...rofit-Loss.pdf

Compare this to first quarter 2018. Only 189K in contributions: https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/wp...fit___Loss.pdf

We're 7 months into 2018. According to the counter on their website, they have currently have received about 303K in contributions. That's less than they managed to secure in the first three months of 2017!

In 2016 they managed to obtain 1.54m in contributions - well above the 1.25m target that year as well.

Does anybody have an idea why contributions seems to be drying up?

Has the accounting practice simply changed?

Do you think the FreeBSD Foundation will reach the target this year?"

It is getting ugly in FreeBSD forums and mailing lists.

You have FreeBSD developers and users who are livid that everything they warned about this toxic CoC being rammed down everyone's throats is coming true with donations collapsing.

And then you have the SJW wackjobs frantically screaming that anyone who doesn't accept their lunatic ideology is an alt-right incel troll and banning, downvoting, and censoring like mad.

We are watching an open source operating system die in real time.

FreeBSD is going to be the first open source operating system to win a Darwin Award.

The interesting thing is that there seems to be more corporate support than before, just "in kind" (eg Intel developers working on BSD). Not clear what the actual funding trend is if you combine direct and in-kind each year.

Was it FreeBSD that had a single so-large-it-surprised-everyone donation a year or so ago ? Thought it was but not sure... but anything is going to trend down for a while after something like that.

FreeBSD donations are not 'trending down', they have collapsed. They are down by half of what they were a year ago.

This collapse in donations puts FreeBSD well into the no longer a viable operating system range and into the legacy hobbyist range.

If it wasn't for Netflix still using for historical reasons FreeBSD would be effectively dead.

What is amazing is the FreeBSD SJW nutcases are doubling down and trying to claim everything is 'just fine'.

Astonishing reversal just a couple years ago a huge number of Linux people I spoke with were actively looking to dump Linux due to the systemd fiasco. Now Linux has ZFS and DTrace and I don't hear anyone expressing any interest in migrating to FreeBSD.
