I think a lot of the paranoia that MS is going to destroy GitHub is a bit silly, they aren't going to destroy a 7.5 billion invest; it is possible knowing MS...
Then you don't know microsoft very well. They have prooved multiple time champions at breaking anything they did well in the past, but also at changing something that works right into something that does not work right. It's pretty hard nowadays to trust them. Looks at others practice it's not the European message on their webpage that prevent microsoft from stealing anything that goes in and out of the computer. There should not be any reason for them not to use it in their own greedy and nauseous interests by gathering informations and why not make it more annoying to use, and why not turn it into some win10 UI with flashy advertisings? Time will tell, but I don't think it's a good news for github

Can you name a single Microsoft product acquisition where years later, consumers are happy with the outcome? Me neither. Microsoft has a very well earned reputation for their "embrace-extend-extinguish" strategy. History proves they aren't going to "destroy" github per se; they are "merely" going to destroy it as we know it, and 5 years from now it will be unrecognizable.

Picture Microsoft Github 365, where you pay an annual subscription fee to use it. All the tools get ported to Windows with Linux becoming a second class citizen, with only some of the tools available. You have to use the new Microsoft Git client, the "legacy" open source git no longer works properly as MS has altered the interface and API's. The web site requires Microsoft Edge, other browsers are not compatible. It's the exact same pattern over and over and over with every product MS acquires, this is nothing new.

Well... GitLab sounds good enough for me!!!

(shame it's just OpenCore... and that it still does not have a Releases' page: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/41766 )

The fact they paid so much more than originally anticipated makes me more concerned. I'm a bit curious about what makes GitHub so enticing that they'd spend so much to acquire it...

Anyway i think any developer should use his own server and install git on it, making his own git server. You can buy a nice cloud server from google for example...costs you like 10 euro a month. Works very nice. On my server i have a few websites running and many git repositories. I would say: life is beautiful.

According to their official twitter account they're now seeing 10 times the normal amount of repository activity, obviously caused by Github users heading for the hills, and are having to scale up their server fleet to cope. Let's hope they make the most of this and grow into an even better Github competitor as there's nothing better for consumers than as much healthy competition as possible.
