Using 390.48 here with 4.16, I applied the patch by hand, you basically gut the one offending unused function.

Can't get NVIDIA drivers working on 4.16.1, and I don't think they worked on 4.16 either.

For me, Nvidia driver 390.48 works well with kernel 4.16.1 (and with kernel 4.16, if I recall correctly). But, admittedly, I take the easy route, and install Nvidia drivers onto Ubuntu from ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa.
