    He always said that afaik.

    They support only the latest revision of a kernel still supported so they expect people using upstream kernel (being either you if you build from source or distro maintainers) to upgrade as soon as possible.

                Can't get NVIDIA drivers working on 4.16.1, and I don't think they worked on 4.16 either.

                      No, some stable releases get the comment "All users of the x.y kernel series should upgrade". Though that happens way less often, as there are usually very important fixes in the stable series.
