Oracle are a terrible company when it comes to OSS and they deserve all the criticism they get. But changing the name from Java EE to Jakarta EE is pretty benign, it barely registers. Java is their trademark, it really doesn't matter that much, the software being FOSS is more important. And now it's under the stewardship of someone other than Oracle which can only be a good thing (for the fools who use Java, I wouldn't touch it...obviously).

Well this is stupid, but it's something people more or less expect Oracle to do. This particular example sounds like they consulted with their lawyers, who told them that they may lose control of the Java trademark if they give away a sub-trademark like JavaEE, and decided they'd just offload the maintenance and development of JavaEE onto the community.

I guess this goes to show is that having the most cynical attitude possible towards sales people driven companies like Oracle is the correct one. If they can't make or save a buck doing something, they won't do it and this case where they offloaded only the work, none of the value, to the community is just another example of just that.

Oracle decided they'd just offload the maintenance and development of JavaEE onto the community.

JavaEE 8 already barely happened. Only with a large amount of pressure from the community and other companies did Oracle go for a Java EE 8.
JavaEE 8 also happened on a smaller scale than previously envisioned with some pieces still missing.
Originally Oracle just wanted to stop at JavaEE 7, so that move was to be expected.

Basically Oracle has quit developing Java as a platform and offloaded everything to different communities.

I guess this goes to show is that having the most cynical attitude possible towards sales people driven companies like Oracle is the correct one. Yep, their management is through and through a non-technical type it seems.
They refuse to take any long-term smart decisions of platform building if it ends up costing them in the short term.
With abandoning Java and neglecting Solaris they basically gave up on everything Sun worked on.

The only consolation is that Oracle is a declining company.

Oracle v. Google is alive and well and living under an assumed name before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeal. It's kinda understandable Oracle would retain its trademark.

Agreed, and it's not like it's going to cause confusion – anyone who works in the Java world knows the score, knows that Oracle are a pain in the ass to deal with, and that the enterprise ecosystem is likely to be much healthier with control handed over to someone actually interested in it.
