Does that mean GTK programs will automatically get colored emoji support?
Also, PNG seems like a strange choice for a font (can’t be scaled cleanly).

Oh finally, how I have waited for this!

It sucks you couldn't have colored emoji on Linux prior to this. Too bad it has taken Linux so long for this.
Yeah, PNG seems a weird choice since you can't scale it. You have emoji next to text, and text come in all different sizes so you want the emoji to scale with the text.

We have opinions on other DEs as well.

First you prove your self by developing and maintaing a toolkit, then you flesh out all the protocol and libs stuff.
More like "First you choose whether you're going to base your DE on Weston or KWin", given that Weston is designed to have pluggable frontends and the KDE crew did include KWin in their explicit goal of pulling KDE in the direction of a bag of reusable components. (eg. Last I checked, LXQt intends to support Wayland by borrowing KWin.)

                  The latest release is 1.14.10.
                  1.15.8 is a development snapshot.

all of them suck, some suck less
I've been using cinnamon for years now, it's the only DE that feels like a classic desktop but uses libraries from this century.
