    The developers within the Sunxi camp working on better Allwinner SoC support under Linux have been reverse-engineering Allwinner's "Cedar" video engine. Their project is being called Cedrus with a goal of "100% libre and open-source" video decode/encode for the relevant Cedar hardware...

    So, basically the sunxi developers are doing much better job than Raspberry developers even without any funding and vendor support? How is it possible? Apparently the legions of RPi noobs don't offer any significant boost in driver development speed in the form of bug requests? IIRC, most Allwinner hardware had mainline support before RPi 3. Does mainline 4.8 now support RPi 1 & 2 fully? Does the free bootloader boot Linux yet?

      basically the other way around. rpi had mailained v4l driver long ago. there is one rpi developer and he have produced opengl driver. there are a bunch of sunxi developers and they have drm kernel module for one soc variant(a13) in 4.7, in mere 5-10 years they could have opengl driver

      apparently rpi was created to teach kids, so they write their 'drivers' in python.

          We already told you sunxi have access to NDA material, Raspi foundation has to act legally.

          And also that most Allwinner stuff is orders of magnitude better hardware-wise than Raspi will ever be, so the hardcore hackers are mostly there.

          Yes, already said. Raspi is supposed to be used by people writing their first userspace software in high level languages, not hardcore hackers writing in C while sleeping.

                There are plenty of uses for computers that benefit from accelerated video playback and encoding, that don't need 3D. Not everyone does gaming or CAD. Desktops can be accelerated in 2D. Most people just want to browse the web, send emails, watch tv/films, and maybe voip.

                  How in the hell can you "game or CAD" on an Allwinner SoC anyway?
                  the weak 3D they offer is useful for modern DEs and applications that might want some kind of GPU accelerated rendering for specific tasks (like making graphs or stuff like that in libreoffice)
