        No. It's still in the .org DNS zone:

        Code:
        $ dig -t ns x.org +norec @a0.org.afilias-nst.info.

        ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
        x.org.            86400    IN    NS    ns1.x.org.
        x.org.            86400    IN    NS    ns2.x.org.

        ;; ADDITIONAL SECTION:
        ns1.x.org.        86400    IN    A    18.7.25.161
        ns2.x.org.        86400    IN    A    131.252.208.82
        But neither of those two nameservers (at MIT and PSU) are responding. Maybe one of them stopped working ages ago but nobody noticed, then the remaining one has an outage today?

          We have known about this for a while ... but can't do anything about it because we cannot make changes to the DNS entries. We contacted the guy a long time ago to change the NS to freedesktop's but to no avail...

            I am sorry, but it sounds like typical marcants of Xorg disaggregation... Disconnection of servers with no controlled transfer of its data on new better ones is a typical failure of unstable organism.

              Looks like they are switching to xorg-foundation.org perhaps? Seeing that mentioned in their new links today.

                But so long as either PSU or MIT can service DNS requests to either of those IPs, the domain will still resolve... even without having control over the domain's registration.

                  that is sort of a temporary work-around

                    I'm not sure what that statement even means..

                    But as was stated elsewhere, the data on the server is backed up, and the services running on it already moved (since we have been working towards retiring the old server already). The only problem is where the dns records point to for domain ns.
