Cool that it's being merged, the Pi Foundation has been really good at keeping their tree up to date with respect to vanilla kernel.org.

We need more arm hardware vendors (specifically those with video hardware) to get in the game and get their stuff into mainline. It sad that so many arm devices are stuck at old kernel versions.

It's also a great low power processor for IoT sensors and doing GPGPU computation in the nodes. The Zeros are also so cheap that you could make a cheap, powerful Beowulf cluster of them.

Powerful Beowulf Cluster out of chips that are connected through a USB Network Interface? Just buy one decent CPU for that money and it will be way more faster than all those Raspis together.

I have questions:

• who was previous maintainer?
• does this mean that new kernels will have out of box support for RPI2? Rasbian will be able to get latest kernel when release happens?
• Is RPi1 also maintained like RPi2 will be now?
• did Anholt mainly finished GPU code, so he has time for other stuff?

If both kernel and mesa is mainline it would be really great for an accellerated desktop experience. Right now only OpenGL ES was possible to use, but most of the Linux games/desktops are using OpenGL. Raspbian already runs a desktop by default, but it could run more snappy and use compiz. I like the RPi mainly for Kodi (and Tvheadend) but you could do much more cool things with it... A RPi 3 with HEVC / HDMI 2.0 and 2 GB RAM would be what i would like to see next.
