    The answer to both of those questions is that OpenMAX isn't meaningfully cross-platform. You can't have a generic implementation which works everywhere; you need to be aware of every platform's special (with a capital S) API and brokenness. It would be great if there was a cross-platform low-level media API, but OpenMAX just isn't it, and never will be. Luckily there's a framework that does this for you though, so you can just target GStreamer.

    Want to seen OpenMAX being a first class feature in GStreamer.
    These open standards from Khronos go a long way in making software api's open and are good for compatibility and compatibility.
