    Kickstarters are very popular those days, if it works for video games, it may also work for key FOSS components like Xorg (which really needs investment).
    the problem isn't lack of funds, it's lack of developer time/availability.

              the x.org foundation explicitly avoids hiring people, since it totally breaks the dynamic. the sole exception to this is EVoC, where it's not about paying for code but instead encouraging people into the community.
