Phoronix: X.Org Needs More People To Run For The Board

The X.Org Board of Directors has delayed their election process by two weeks in hopes of having more candidates nominated to run for the board as currently they do not have enough candidates to start an election...

There are plenty of internet forum trolls for the role i think. So many Xorg fans that hate Wayland.... They should be candidates...

And yet some delusional people think Wayland is some sort of psyop trying to force everyone to switch from Xorg instead of Xorg simply beginning to implode under it's own weight. We literally do not have a choice to use it anymore.

But all the Wayland kids keep saying how the X.Org project is focused on Wayland these days and that "all the developers are Wayland developers".

So if no-one wants to be on the X.Org board, surely that means *both* projects are looking pretty obsolete and dead?

Bring on X12. The open-source community really needs a modern display system.

At first Wayland was developed by one person only and it has become the new standard for the Linux desktop. So what is your excuse for writing forum posts instead of developing "the modern display system the open-source community needs"?

Site like NeedX.org needed for those in problems with their legacy apps, but commercial option is not always required, but maybe possible...

Going X to obsolete mode also via Steam would also mean that Steam will do *hard* work with their suppliers on migration...

This could mean a lot of years to support X.org, but don't know... This is not commercial approach to this problem...

It doesn't mean that at all. Being a developer in a project is a very different role from being a board member. Board members on open source projects typically don't have any say in the technical direction of the underlying projects. Instead they are dealing with administrative tasks and things like funding for a non-profit organization. Very different set of skills and goals and an even more thankless volunteer based task. This is why most open source projects just join a large umbrella organization like SFLC or SPI instead of doing their own thing. If you want to understand the technical health of a project, look at things like commit rate, number of contributors etc.

                  Wayland is X12.
X11 is unmaintainable (not sure how many times you need to hear this before it registers), and you can't "rip out" any parts of it because that would completely break the design and any changes would not be backwards compatible. Which is what the Xorg team did when they started Wayland.

Wayland is much better. But you have to face the reality that Linux desktops are at the bottom of the priority list of open source desktop software. As such, they don't have the funding and man-power to fully adopt Wayland without usability regressions.
X11 is much much worse but someone already did the job of making it decently usable. There is no Xorg fanboyism involved. It's simply the least broken alternative and this really reflects the bad situation of the Linux desktop. Literally no one will spend a dime on funding Linux desktop development.
Pretty much anyone saying Wayland compositors less broken than Xorg are kidding themselves. Both are broken. xorg is only slightly less.
