The license of windows is included when you bought that laptop, usually windows 11 home edition.

I agree both are terrible in different ways though, never did I argue that they are not terrible, just pointing out that when you buy a new laptop or oem machine, they get the license fee anyway.

The difference is that both Apple and Microsoft do care because they are building a ecosystem to trap you in it. Both companies can make money from you through the app store, as well as telemetry data collection. Microsoft doesn't care anymore that you don't buy a $100 copy of Windows 11 since they just want you on Windows period. The difference is that Apple is doing a good job at it, since more pro Apple users will claim that it's superior since the iPhone, the iwatch, the Macbook, and everything in between like itunes works very well with each other. Microsoft just recently started merging Windows with Xbox and even then not 100%. There's a very good reason why Windows is adopting some Linux like functionality because Microsoft is afraid. That's why Windows has WSL and soon repositories for Windows 11. Microsoft is already started to embrace and extend with Linux. Guess what's next?

These days Dell, Lenovo, and HP sell a few laptops with Ubuntu installed from the factory. You can find them on their respective websites, at least for the UD.

So Microsoft doesn't get a Windows OEM license when those are sold. But they represent a tiny fraction of total sales.

I do agree that different products from apple works quite well with each other.
Regarding WSL, not sure about microsoft being panic but able to run Linux on Windows easily and perhaps more efficiently is great.
Not sure what is the next step for them, I don't think they would abandon their own working NT kernel for Linux, considering that they value backward compatibilities over anything else.

Yes, and several others. But I'm sure Microsoft doesn't care at all about Framework, System76, Tuxedo Computers, Entroware, etc... because their sales volume is so small compared to Lenovo, Dell, HP, ASUS, etc...

Yeah, I wish framework and system76 get more popular though.
I like framework's repairable laptop and system76 is probably one of the few that builds linux-ready laptop.
