Phoronix: X.Org Server 21.1 Development Snapshot Released

There hasn't been a major X.Org Server release since v1.20 three years ago and not much interest in seeing a new release with more Linux distributions switching to Wayland-based desktops and XWayland recently seeing its own standalone releases. But now there is an X.Org Server 21.1 development release as the first step towards a possible new stable release in the future...

Wasn't there talk of automated monthly releases / snapshots?

      Wait what? Automated?!

That doesn't sound like a good idea, unless the automated system is aware of bugs.

Confused. wasn't X.org dead? and posts claiming that development was stalled ?

          The article doesn't suggest otherwise.

Nice! I'm still stuck with softwares that rely on X for remote connection. One last stable release is very welcome.

It's unlikely that you're going to get that, unfortunately.

And you should be aware of the explicit statement: "there will most likely be no proper release". And you can pretty much take that to the bank(*). You are, of course, free to build your own release.

(*) A full proper release requires someone willing to do all the really really hard work no one and no org is willing to commit to do. X.org has, essentially, put out a help wanted ad, and gotten zero applications (to be honest, it was more like everyone stepped back three steps).

Read the post both of you.
Note that this development snapshot is nominally of whole X, there will most likely be no proper release. At least Xorg DDX is likely to go the same path as Xwayland.
There is no plan for there to be a 21 stable release. This is mostly just keeping the core synced with Xwayland and xquartz(the macos X11) developments.

This still does not change that the x.org X11 is still on the path to being 100 percent dead on bare metal.

If we do get a x.org X11 21 stable release for bare metal I would not be surprised if it end up restricted to mode-setting driver only particularly now that Linux kernel 5.14 has simpledrm. Yes this would result in restriction for those who want to use vesa or equal modes to needing 5.14 or newer Linux kernel and what ever bsd kernel gets simpledrm driver support. So acobar if there is a 21 stable release of x.org X11 it could be extremely bumpy for existing solutions so I am not sure you will be welcoming this if this happens. End of life released of software comes really questionable if update is worth it.
