Yunit have also expressed interest in Mir now that there is the Wayland client support.
So does this mean that mir (or unity 8?) is now essentially a wayland compositor?

Because the devs are being fired in order to cut down on expenses. Canonical doesn't want to invest in its own desktop environment, because that thing doesn't bring them any money now that the Ubuntu phones are dead.

at least they choose kde or mate, something not gnome. I will see they reverting the decision after 18.04lts

You do realize Ubuntu MATE and Kubuntu exist, right?

Ironic that Canonical are looking for MATE to pick up their failed experiment, when MATE's original purpose was to compete with experimental stuff (some of which was Canonical's) by offering a "traditional" interface.

It has Qt and KDE dependencies and is therefore not suited for other distributions.

                    Lumina? Bloargh... NIH
                    It's tainted by it's non-Linux origin..

sarcasm aside, Lumina also uses QT.
