    How then would the client that handles the mouse press get the content to paste?

    When a client (X11 or Wayland) received the mouse press and decides it wants to do a paste action, it still needs to get the content for that, just like when triggering "normal" paste.

    The system needs a mechanism for clients to check for the content to paste.
