Ubuntu 14.04 Codename Revealed, Mir Haters Attacked

[Mir] is either going to change how EVERY graphical application has to be developed, or what users can make use of it. This is the biggest threat of fragmentation Linux is facing, aside from ARM vs x86.

Normal desktop GUI apps are written to the GTK or KDE API or one of the Java-toolkits like SWT/Swing/JavaFX and don't go down to the X/Wayland/Mir level, so they shouldn't need to be updated or face fragmentation issues.

I should be able to use the same GTK/Swing apps that I currently do regardless of whether my system uses X, Wayland, or Mir.

Am I missing something?

If nothing else, this is solid entertainment. When he said Mir was being attacked for purely political reasons I nearly lost it, then when he went on to bash others for NIH I really did lose it. I still got some tears in my eyes from laughing about this. I swear he must of left his brain in space while he was up there.

libertarianism was essentially a synomim for anarchism or socialism in the 19th century. it wasn't invented in 1950s. there was an active movement in America before Rand was even born. benjamin tucker, Lysander Spooner, Frank Chadorov. and in europe books like the The Man versus the State by Spencer.

I remain totally agnostic on the Mir issue. Whether it's Wayland or Mir that makes the most progress, I'm just going to use the one that comes out on top. I'm hoping it's Wayland mostly cause of political issues, but only time will tell which one is a suitable replacement for X.

At least since Canonical announced Mir, the Wayland team kinda got their asses in gear lol.

I will watch the show, and reserve hate/praise until we see a mature display server!

The Tea Party wants basic human rights

What do you consider "basic human rights"? Because AFAIK, they want to shut down medical care for everyone who can't afford it, and that sounds like a basic human right to me. But I acknowledge it's arguable, and "basic human rights" vary from one ideology to other. I'd like to know which are according to you, and if you happen to know, which are according to the Tea Party.

For the most part, it is nonsensical FUD. But that doesn't mean Mir isn't going to cause some grief for Linux users who won't be using Ubuntu for whatever reason (there are plenty of good reasons not to use Ubuntu that have nothing to do with it being necessarily 'bad'). Imagine, for instance Steam OS eventually gets pretty big and decides to go with Mir for whatever reason. There is a possiblity that some games will support only Mir or have severely degraded experiences elsewhere, leaving everyone except for SteamOS or Ubuntu users with a problem simply because they're using Wayland or X11. Of course, SDL and similar libraries will continue to support multiple display technologies, but there is a potential for bugs under Wayland to be ignored since SteamOS uses Mir, or some such nonsense. On top of this, Mir isn't entirely portable, and if it were there are still issues with copyright that would prevent other distros from using it.

So, regardless of Mir's technical merits (which have yet to be proven in a meaningful fashion), Mir is just another point where app developers may support Ubuntu and forget everyone else, as we have already seen with various closed software on Linux. Not to mention we already have deep conflicts between upstream packages and Ubuntu.

Even a highly optimistic view on this issue should permit some skepticism. Things aren't going to go smoothly, and 'just use Ubuntu' is about as good an answer as 'just use Windows'.

The Tea Party wants basic human rights where a giant federal government doesn't run absolutely everything in society. I agree with the Tea Party and don't understand the criticism.

It's not hard to follow the criticism at all. Canonical is often accused of freeloading off the Linux community and not contributing anything to Linux society. Basically a useless sponge soaking up everyone else's hard labors. And worse yet, since the introduction of Unity, dictating to their user community exactly how the UI is going to look and work w/ no option for non-conformity, and if you don't like it, then you can just go grab your ankles. Now if these accusations are true, then it's easy to see why Shuttleworth would not be aligned with the TP. He seems to have an Obama complex.

I also am cheering for both Mir and Wayland: I'm excited about either tech making the Linux desktop even better.

I agree. To see the way people got their panties all crunched up over Mir is just embarrassing. Ultimately the cream is going to rise to the top. It always does. And that cream will begin with an X and end with a .org.
