I hear you. But there are a few problems with this reasoning.

1. The goal is to create a FOSS OS. Not just an OS derived from FOSS elements. We already have two very functional OSes. (And yes I use Windows 8 and Server 2012 at home and would take a bullet for them, especially the later.)
2. There is already "strong leadership" in the FOSS world. Both Red Hat and Attachmate are well based corporations.
3. The crucial difference is not that we don't have strong leadership, but that only Canonical tries to make a distro with good usability for desktop users. Both RHEL and SLES are abortions, when it comes to polish and user friendliness. If anything, ironically, Debian, the grandpa distro, is light years more user friendly than RHEL. It actually has MP3 support out of the box, an ample repo, and a package management system that works well.

This is what I can whole heartedly agree to. It will keep on being the same old shovelware and the masses will forever be relegated to eat up what the masters serve them. But who am I to judge people who like to be put behind the bars of the paddy waggon instead of being in the driver seat?

So the world of GNU/Linux will soldier on, welcoming everyone who can engage their brain for more than two minutes a day. The rest of the masses will very soon have three options of crapware to choose from.

CLA can't take away any of the freedoms from the users. That is why GPL is great. What it does is foster a safer environment for the principal developer. CLA is irrelevant for those who are into FOSS for the freedom and at the same time is good for business.

CLA can take away all of the freedoms from the users. That is why GPL alone is great. What it does is foster a free (as a beer) environment for Canonical. CLA is deleterious for those who are into FOSS for the freedom and at the same time is good for Canonical to transform third party GPL code in closed source software and to do it in a non reciprocal manner without any obligation in regard of FOSS developers.
