None of them stated any upcoming port to either Wayland or Mir (I do hope they will support Wayland, eventually), and you should know porting the toolkit doesn't port the DEs. It just ports the apps, and specifically those not using any X specifics. Anything using directly X (which all window managers do, because there's no workaround it) needs to be ported manually.

Not exactly true although not exactly false, either. I don't know about GTK, but Qt 5 provides Wayland compositor classes that make it much easier for DE's to write Wayland compositors. So although porting to Qt 5 will not give automatic support, it will make the porting much easier.

That is assuming LXDE doesn't switch to using Kwin. The modularization of frameworks 5 should make this possible, but who knows whether the LXDE camp has any interest.

A quick search didn't reveal the answer so I'll ask here;

How long until I can run without X? (I know it depends on what progs I use, let's say WINE and firefox)
Also have an HTPC (AMD APU) that is itching to be running XBMC+Wayland without anything else in the way.

Is this a complete waste looking into it now, or are we getting close?

XBMC is using SDL, and since it's a fullscreen app, it should run on Wayland right now. Probably not entirely without bugs and not all features will be supported just yet, but it should run (you need to enable SDL's Wayland backend first with an environment variable, and probably need experimental SDL and XBMC code for it). Yes, they do. I was thinking about it, and the main reason some think the patch for using native D3D9 should not be merged, is a reason to not merge Wayland or Mir support: it's Linux specific. I wonder what would happen on that camp. If Wayland or Mir are supported, I see no reason (aside from possible code reasons, I mean) to not merge D3D9 bypassing.

Gnome is looking to have a port to Wayland functional this year.
KDE is looking to have a port to Wayland functional next summer.
Enlightenment is...I think this christmas?

Firefox...is still using GTK2, you're screwed there until they make the port a priority. Best bet will be Rekonq (when they make the Qt5 port), Ephiphany (GTK3 port), or maybe Chrome if Google makes it a priority.
Wine... Not sure. I'm honestly not sure how heavily X-dependent wine is.

Mate is soon to come to Wayland as well
and Martin Gr??lin had KDE running on Wayland so we may see a build this year

It will finally eliminate tearing, and seems likely to improve smoothness of things like resizing windows. DRI3 could help out some of that in X, but it's yet to be seen how well that will work out.

the E19 guys showed off there Wayland Desktop today so i say soon Wine and FireFox need Xorg to run for now far as i know
