Phoronix: Hyprland 0.42 Wayland Compositor Ditches Wlroots, Adds Explicit Sync Support

Hyprland 0.42 has been released as the newest feature release to this dynamic tiling Wayland compositor that remains "100% independent" and "doesn't sacrifice on its looks." Hyprland had been doing some heavy lifting via the Wlroots library but now in version 0.42 that dependency is eliminated...

Is there any comments or discussion why they ditch wlroots? What is the benefit of going their own way instead of using something that is kind of like an open standard implementation?

Vaxry explained it on his blog.
He finds that wlroots is a great piece of software, but he has some gripes with it.
      • Often something is broken because of a careless mistake that every other language would find at compilation time, but not C.
      • There isn't proper documentation that's up to date
      • it takes waaaaaaaaaaaaay to long for things to move along. an merge request that is done can easily be delayed 9 months because of styling nitpicks.
      • and he himself is banned from contributing
So he decided that he's better off using aquamarine, which is only a small library that does some work, and for the rest implement the wayland protocols himself.

I wonder if their "Aquamarine" will still work with wayvnc, as I assume it's a fork of wlroots.

Vaxry didn't like being warned by the freedesktop guys behind wlroots that the kind of transphobia that was prevalent in his discord until recently would not be tolerated by them.

His very mature reaction was to publish those messages on his blog and to threaten sending his lawyer after them (no, that doesn't make any sense).

This riled up the anti-woke faction and ultimately lead to him being banned from participating in freedesktop projects.

He could have still stuck with wlroots. You don't need to be permitted to directly contribute to use a piece of open source software. He instead chose to do his own thing.

He is very young, very talented and sadly very much part of the anti-woke online sphere.

Freedesktop is a moral police now? 😂 Maybe stick to the desktop development? Stuff outside their git has nothing to do with them. Now I see why we can't have wlroots as a standard.

Glad hyperland is progressing and staying independent!

There's already enough misinformation and dick swinging in this entire ordeal, let's not add anymore.

There is nothing "standard" about it. Any good spec should have multiple implementations. Weston is the reference implementation and used by among other places WSL. GNOME and KDE does not use wlroots and many other window managers use other implementations. It's perfectly fine for Hyprland not to depend on wlroots.
