Wayland support in MATE just sucks. Totally completely unusable. XFCE is way ahead. Unfortunately - MATE is may favorite in X11 world, but migrating to wayland I could not use it. Almost all software either not working at all or require Xwayland support. Not only require - but bady drain battery by this X11 wayland emulation.

So far I use xfce4 panel, whisker menu ( a bit patched - otherwise it grows with every pop-up), clock/weater applets, tray applet , and thunar - from XFCE, atril, eom and engrampa from MATE , wayfre as compositor and some command line tools assighed to keyboard shortcuts. And finally all this gives pretty nice environment that can be used.

The philosophy behind free and open source software is to tell people "stop complaining" "if you don't like it develop something you like BUT DO IT!, and but stop complaining".
I'm fine with Xorg. Wayland fans on the other hand have been trying hard to portray Wayland as a ready to use replacement for Xorg which it is not.

I however am not trying to convince anyone of anything, I just call things what they are, not what people want to believe they are. In short, I'm a cynic. Is this OK with the open source movement or it's also unacceptable?

I still run xfce. I'm not interested in buggy Wayland compositors since I use my computer to do work.

I'd rather see xfce use/advance wlroots instead of rewriting their own. This is the main problem I have w Wayland; it's a half-solution.

I would agree with you, if this were about five years ago or more. But I've been using wayland daily for about that long, and I really don't have any issues.
Perhaps XFCE should have started working on wayland a long time ago.

Hey, I'm just some guy that held out until sway could provide me with a fully functioning desktop. I don't see how that's egocentric or a megalomaniac.
If you have other needs and they are not being met on wayland by whatever you're using, that really isn't any reason to go around labeling everyone else.

Well said. Thanks for proving my point. And now I will disable notifications for these forums. I'm effing tired of this.

They couldn't do it because they were stuck on GTK2 which is not compatible with wayland, it's not much that XFCE is on GTK3.

That was the date of the initial commit. The client and server protocols weren't considered stable until about 5 years later. It wasn't really until that point that toolkits and compositors could start working on implementing it and it was another few years before compositors actually started to claim support for the protocol.
