Phoronix: The Work Ahead For Ubuntu 21.04 To Switch To Wayland By Default

Last month was the delightful news that Ubuntu 21.04 is aiming to use Wayland by default for non-NVIDIA systems on the GNOME desktop rather than the X.Org session. While there is two months to go until the Ubuntu 21.04 release, there still is more work ahead in making that shift a reality...

Below is the Wayland metabug for Firefox that tracks all all Wayland-related bugs in Firefox. It seems to be looking good.

Sounds good! Though I guess they're pretty close to their feature freeze...

Really interesting work! It finally feels like things are speeding up and the key players are finally migrating and fixing the smaller issues that (some) people complain about.
Personally I haven't had any issues with wayland in a couple of years, but the 'paper cuts' need to get fixed for it to become the de facto standard.

They also made sure to do some basic GNOME40 packaging support for 21.04. They also keep pushing MRs on GNOME master branches. So yeah this tells Canonical remains committed to GNOME upstream while they stay on 3.38 during the Debian Freeze and Wayland Transition.

Good. It should speed up Wayland adoption.

Indeed. Some people don't like to admit it, but Ubuntu is the head honcho in the Linux desktop. What they do affects a lot of third party software development. They adopting Wayland by default, will certainly give that final push some developers needed, to start supporting Wayland properly.
