Phoronix: KDE's KWin Now Considers Its X11 Code To Be Under An "Eternal Feature Freeze"

With KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS, the KWin window manager / compositor's X11/X.Org code will now be under an "eternal feature freeze" as development will focus more on Wayland...

Has the situation with hardware video acceleration under wayland improved recently? Last I checked, it was still a crap shoot, making wayland a non-option for a laptop where you care about battery life, or anything with a weak cpu.

In what way was it bad? I use KDE+Wayland+Compositing effects with a Haswell IGP and it has run smooth for me for around a year.

I don't think there would be any expectations for new KWin X11 feature updates anyway. Luckily I don't miss any (thx to Compton).

I'm quite happy that this is announced now for Kwin! This will hopefully push Plasma on Wayland forward :-)

I think he meant hardware-accelerated video decoding, since he mentioned battery life.

VA-API works, IIRC, but not VDPAU (which never will).

Unfortunately Plasma on Wayland is still an unusable mess for me
                  Crashes, missing menus, etc..
I hope in 5.12 will be in a better shape.
