Phoronix: OpenGL vs. Vulkan Linux Gaming Performance Ending Out 2017

For those wondering how the Vulkan vs. OpenGL performance is for various Linux games as we near the end of 2017, here are some test results from the benchmark-friendly Linux games that offer both OpenGL and Vulkan renderers. Tests were done with two Radeon graphics cards and two NVIDIA graphics cards using the latest available Linux GPU drivers.

Why are the colors flipped in that last graph?

Just cause it was in a different result file and how the color allocation ended up and didn't notice until after publishing.

Again, this would be more useful if you also included a weaker cpu, as vulkan can help lot more in weaker cpus vs good cards

What hardware/software were used for the CPU usage graphs? Or are they averages across all tested combinations?

I don't think it's right that the benchmark lists Serious Sam 3 BFE, as it isn't serious Sam 3 BFE being benchmarked, but Fusion, which is a different game, running on a different engine. It's like benchmarking Half-Life Source, but calling it Half-Life. Not the same thing, especially not from a benchmarking point of view.

All the talk about AMD and vulkan, still nvidia is the one that gains with vulkan over OpenGL.

AMD is strong with OpenGL but vulkan only games are entering the linux gaming scene.

AMD cards tests were done with open source drivers, which are known to be better than closed source for OpenGL and not better for Vulkan (until recently, clearly worse but this much less clear now).
Results for AMD cards would have been different with AMDGPU-PRO.

Most AMD users are using opens source drivers, so this choice is logical, but testing both drivers would have been interesting. We can still have a look at the last AMD open vs closed test.

this testing was done prior to the availability of AMDVLK, but keep in mind that driver isn't yet easily available from Linux distribution repositories and also has issues with games like Dawn of War 3 and F1 2017
Michael Out of interest, what issues have you had with those? So far our testing hasn't shown any issues.

Yep, and so now it's time to get strong with Vulkan on Linux. If we had prioritized Vulkan over OpenGL during the last year or two that would have been nice for winning benchmarks but not for the bulk of our customers running OpenGL games on Linux.
