I am wondering who is writing the drivers. Is is Apple? Or the manufacturer? Isn't it just extra work for the manufacturer for a probably sub-par driver? Is the manufacturer under contract to write the driver? I have been wondering this since day-1.

OpenGL is dead. It's on long-term life support. Vulkan interchange with Metal is already in the works for what matter glTF 2.0. Game developers have embraced both, but more are already using Metal across Apple's ecosystem.

It's not Apple's job to do the heavy lifting for the FOSS community who only cares about one platform: Linux.

I/O Kit. Apple writes their own drivers and will work with AMD on testing.

          A) Someone should sue some people who have shares on both MS and Apple.

          B) AMD and NVidia should force Vulkan via their drivers everywhere.

There could literally never be another game or application using OpenGL again, and yet it would still be more important than Metal for years.

Nobody should care about Metal, it's dead anyway.
As mobile games gradually switches to Vulkan over OpenGL ES, iOS will be left behind. This will sooner or later "force" Apple to support Vulkan.

How nice. It appears that in the end we have two closed API:s driving their own route. Thou the performance isnt bad with metal. But as it tends to be as low level as vulkan they would have easily acquired about same level of performance with vulkan too ?

Khronos recommends OpenGL for some use cases. Vulkan is better for developers that have the time and expertise to get the most performance out of the hardware, for example with AAA games/game engines. But OpenGL is significantly easier to write and so is better for more intermediate users. Given that open source development is often hobbyist in nature and therefore oftentimes has intermediate developers, and given you're currently on a forum that is geared towards open source, maybe it's not a good idea to write off OpenGL.

When Khronos released Vulkan, they reaffirmed their commitment to supporting and developing OpenGL. It's not dead. We all want the likes of Ferel and other Linux devs to move onto Vulkan, but in other arenas OpenGL has its place.

Metal 2 and not Vulkan adoption? One good reason to continue to stay away from everything Apple.

Well the recent patch for Warthunder that added Metal to its game under MacOS saw a double or more boost in performance, quite nice. However developer claims no gains will be had for Vulkan for PC users.... DERP, so yes Apple is just spending money to buy their way through the API wars IMO. I just hope we get more developers pushing Vulkan because there is still a huge amount of nay sayers around atm. Sadly.
