Phoronix: AMDGPU-PRO vs. NVIDIA On Linux With OpenGL & Vulkan

With Croteam recently having released an updated Talos Principle with better Vulkan performance and the NVIDIA 375.20 and AMDGPU-PRO 16.40 both having come out recently, here is a fresh OpenGL and Vulkan graphics API performance comparison when using Valve's Dota 2 and The Talos Principle, both of which games on Linux offer both graphics API renderers.

GTX1060 6GB seems to be the best for 1080p

      Michael

Good tests and good for test lower resolution and upper

However lack of talos 1080p tests

What makes you say that? All of the nvidia GPUs appear to be bottlenecked by something at 1080p. The 1050 is more than good enough for 1080p.

Indeed. The 4k res makes it far more GPU dependent, which probably gives much closer results. Of course, now everything is GPU dependent where otherwise you could get a split between the slower and faster cards.

So R9 290 seems to run fine now with "modesetting"

I can think of an easier way to test CPU limited scenarios that doesn't involve using an 8-core Xeon.

Indeed one of the main aims of Vulkan is to enable better gaming experiences on weaker CPUs, so by using the Xeon you are kind of missing an entire area of test coverage - although it might be a good test of multithreading.

It might be nice to get a CPU scaling in Vulkan on Nvidia/AMD article?

As said before, the R9 290 has always worked fine with AMDGPU-PRO.

Yeah, just joking a bit bout that fake modesetting

I really wish AMD would show Vulkan more love. There's clearly potential here. I get that DX12 is their bread and butter right now, as it's where they can beat both Nvidia and Intel but Vulkan is their baby. You always shower your baby with love. No one leaves baby in the corner.
