On the software side, the issue I see with "cutting corners" is that one might feel like extrapolating information based on a handful of cherry picked and bogus data points, which in the case of canned benchmark, can be quite extreme. This in turn results in the competition (that thing that let's you vote with your wallet in the first place) looking falsely worse in your eyes. Even more so for closed source drivers, since the "corner cutting" happens at the supplier's whim. Queue in planned obsolescence.
