You need to specify glamor? I don't think you have got a choice.

tl;dr:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf
Code:Section "Device" Identifier "Radeon" Driver "amdgpu" Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" Option "DRI" "3" Option "TearFree" "on" EndSection
Yes I did exactly that, still tearing like crazy
should be noted That I am on kernel 4.2.0-35 mint mate 17.3 marco wm no compositing

IIRC the Linux Catalyst driver included triple-buffering code which basically emulated a compositor even if you weren't running one, but I don't think we have anything like that in amdgpu (there was a lot of push-back about it in Catalyst).
EDIT - I'm not sure what the TearFree option in X does these days, will ask around.Last edited by bridgman; 07 April 2016, 11:21 AM.Test signature

IIUC the vulkan is the same that's in windows so once the pro driver is out for real then we should have an conformant vulkan driver.

It should be noted that I tried compton and metacity compositing to no avail

Which driver were you using with your GCN 1.0 card and was that tear-free ? Just trying to figure out what the baseline should be here...
Also my recollection is that compositors used to have the ability to enable/disable vsync just like games - if the compositor isn't locking to vsync then I think you'll get bad tearing even with a compositor.Test signature

For my r9 270 I was using fglrx crimson 15.203 from the amd website, desktop tearfree on, 3d off unless app specefies. I was using the marco(MATE) wm and no compositor.

bridgman you can contact me a lot faster on irc freenode #gamingonlinux I'm on 24/7
also fglrx crimson 15.203 and the r9 380x do not play nice even on older kernels, tearfree not functioning
I am starting to think Im cursed... I bought a newer gpu to get better performance... and all I got was more issues
