About time. There are a lot more optional extensions than there are mandatory ones.

It can be expected that only flagship Android devices from 2026 will get Vulkan 1.4-compliant drivers.

Great news, all I want is Vulkan to be a clean API.
Rare major updates with a few new features are a good thing.

I think a lot of the Mesa drivers will quite quickly be compatible, but yes, the weird mess of proprietary blobs and poor update cycles will likely mean Android (as usual) will lag behind for quite a while.

its more like they don't need to, android intentionally lags behind because they want common targets, see unlike everything else in the world, android actually cares about compatiblity, and they don't like doing things that break compat. Ofc they do sometimes, but they try to keep it as little as possible.

Updating your vulkan driver so its compliant with a later spec would break... nothing.

Yes, but people would use it and then those new applications would break on older devices. This is the same reason why Android mandates you do not advertise Vulkan video because they do not want people to use it because it breaks backwards compatibility.

Android doesn't mandate shit. That's Google and as aways, they don't want you doing anything on your phone.
