    I do not understand where this extension anxiety disorder comes from...
    What would even be a viable alternative to an extension system??

        The opt-in nature of Vulkan extensions is meant to prevent the problems OpenGL had.

        So far, at least, I haven't heard any developers complaining about extensions, only people on Phronoix forums.
