Monopolies can be entertaining sometimes. Like when watching Google Stadia grab and twist EA's sack.

Agree. EA never does the right thing by choice. They likely want the option to run on Stadia.

The Origin client is working again with the wine-staging 4.7 tkg version which is available via Lutris. However, I would love to see a native Origin client for Linux that doesn't crash after every update and for it to implement something like Proton, DXVK and D9VK.

If they adopt Vulkan for their new titles, porting games around (between supported platforms, and afaik this means Windows/Linux) will be significantly easier and there can be near-zero performance impact due to porting (as Vulkan is the same).

Also Mac ports can be done more easily because MoltenVK can be used to remap Vulkan over Apple's NIH Vulkan lookalike called Metal.

THere have been rumors about Playstation eventually adding Vulkan support. That would also be a major thing for porting.

If that's the reason, then damn.

Are they so moist down there that they jump in so fast?

Unfortunately Johan Anderson left Dice years ago and with that departure they went totally silent on Vulkan. Also the quality of their DX12 work dropped and started performing slower than DX11, still a problem to this day on their frostbyte engine.

Funny how one lead graphics programmer leaving can influence the direction so much.

Isn't it far more likely that their Vulkan work would be for Android gaming?

I think you mean "EA joins the likes of Valve ...".

That's lucky because you will now need it running in the background in order to use Vulkan.
