Phoronix: GitHub Has More Than 3,000 Projects Mentioning Vulkan, 100~200 For D3D12

Almost one year to the day after more than 2,000 open-source projects were referencing Vulkan in some capacity on GitHub, over the weekend it breached the threshold of more than 3,000 projects...

Well, i guess it is normal that open APIs are more exposed on open... meanwhile AAA game studios prefer not to do it on open

Companies like to own an API, so nothing changes

I think it's worth it to mention that there are some engines that are open as in open to view, not open as in open source compatible license or open source compatible development models.

GitHub is where people build software. More than 100 million people use GitHub to discover, fork, and contribute to over 420 million projects.

Amazon Lumberyard is a free AAA game engine deeply integrated with AWS and Twitch – with full source. - aws/lumberyard

Unity C# reference source code. Contribute to Unity-Technologies/UnityCsReference development by creating an account on GitHub.

Requires special registration (no financial cost)

Apparently you are able to get Unity's core c++ and c# code without having to pay money. I have not had interest to look at it, probably won't ever.

      This is sad, but true.

I wonder if Microsoft is doing the same searches, but including private repositories and uses that to gauge how many teams are adopting their APIs. That's what I would be doing if I owned Github!

The adoption of Vulkan is immense because Vulkan is the only way to go for embedded devices, computing graphics on HPC, 3D applications on desktop and porting real time 3D applications to other platforms.
The mentioned mixture will make it the predominant graphics API in the world.

On the other hand regarding gaming which might be the first thought you'd have when reading about Vulkan the existing structures and the long development process of those lead to a delay for this sector as we have already seen in the past years.
Though, uniting 3D application programming for all platforms it is just a matter of time for Vulkan to dominate the gaming sector as well.

                GitHub:
                - Proprietary
                - Hosted by GitHub and Amazon (I think). Self-hosting impossible unless you can afford it
                - Owned by Microsoft

                GitLab:
                - Open-source (sort of)
                - Hosted by Google, but you can host it yourself
                - Owned by GitLab
                - Can be bought by M$ too, any time they want

FTFY. People seem to forget the most important part.

But they can't retract the gitlab license you have on the source code to run it on your own server.
But more important than those 2 is probably gogs/gitea .
