Phoronix: VKD3D Gets Patches For Offering Direct3D 12 On macOS Via MoltenVK

Last month Wine introduced support for Vulkan-using Windows programs on macOS via the MoltenVK library for mapping Vulkan API calls to the Apple Metal API. Now the next logical step is available in patch form: getting VKD3D supported on macOS for allowing Direct3D 12 to begin working on Mac for Windows games/applications...

So now, windows programs running on top of Wine can use D3D over Vulkan over Metal...

Its what happens when you take in proprietary API bullshit and the OS only supports other proprietary API bullshit. You need some sweet sauce of freedom in the middle to bring them together.

I think its the point of those low-level APIs to be mapped to each other. Since they‘re all low-level there is no abstraction levels that the wrapper-code has to walk through unnecessarily, it is basically like mapping wgl to mesa. The future benchmark for those wrapper libraries will be how many 100 times they can wrap in circles before the performance drops by 1%.

              So hilariously pathetic.

The failed and garbage Vulkan combined with something but a handful of desperate losers use to try to play games give a crap about this.

Pretty cool. Obviously Codeweavers mainly care about MacOS customers (as that's their main income source), so having VKD3D work on MacOS means having a bigger monetary incentive to keep working on the project, which in the end will also help the Linux ecosystem (unless you are one of those puritans who refuse to run Wine at all, and that's fine as well). Nonetheless all of the DX-to-VK translators (VK9, VKD3D, DXVK) are awesome projects and I wish nothing but good for them and their developers.
