No, it's definitely there. For DP we can do 6,8,10,12 bpc, and for HDMI 8,12 bpc.

I wouldn't be surprised, as TV postproduction houses used up to 10-bit and digital film editing used 12-bit log or 16-bit linear - even in the 90's.

In fact, I've been hearing about >= 10-bit on PCs for probably a decade? For instance, I see the Radeon HD 5000 series of 2010 even supported 12-bit:

BDM3270 is only 8bit+FRC, not 10bit

I do believe that is wrong.
According to TFTCentral (and other sites by the looks of it), the Philips BDM3270QP uses a 32"WS AU Optronics AMVA (M320DVN01.0) panel.

That panel is a 10bit AMVA panel (see table below for stats)

Perhaps, but Intel hardware didn't have the ability to output it until recently. AFAIK it has been working for a long time in FBOs.

while not "cheap" I got my Philips BDM3270 (31.5" 2k) for ~$500AUD - so it is not super expensive either

BDM3270 is only 8bit+FRC, not 10bit
