Hi, maiden post from a long-time Phoronix lurker here.

Wasn't it true that any GPU advanced enough to at least support Compute Shaders (OpenGL 4.3 / OpenGL ES 3.1) could theoretically support Vulkan as well?

Doesn't this imply that it would be possible to write a Vulkan driver for pre-GCN AMD hardware (Terascale, Evergreen, etc)?

I'm not asking whether it would be trivial, just if it would be possible. Developing Vulkan drivers for older hardware could perhaps squeeze out a little bit more performance, maintainability and forward compatibility with some (not too demanding) newer games. And even cooler than that, it would mean that these older beasts would get better capabilities and support than they've ever had, even in Windows, since AMD apparently has no intention to release Vulkan drivers for their legacy products, even if technically feasible.

I could be missing something here, of course. For one thing, there are different kinds of pre-GCN AMD GPU families with varying capabilities, such as FP64. I'm not sure if they all support Compute Shaders. There are undoubtedly people more knowledgeable than I in this forum who could answer this question.
