isn't here a way of making grub/syslinux use the native resolution/kms

Grub comes before linux so there is no KMS at that point.

Both my laptops -- ThinkPad X1 and T520 -- have SSDs. Cold boots are faster than hibernation resumes. So, yeah, I shut down and power up pretty regularly.
