Wouldn't games have to add support for this extension to benefit from its performance improvements?

This is the purpose of this extension. There is already pipeline cache that allows reusing pipelines but application has limited control over cache. This extension was created to bypass VkPipelineCache and let application manage cache directly.

I wonder how many games are affected by this, and by how much.

Doesn't matter what UE does with this, all UE games on PC are d3d12 only now.

Actually many games nowadays provide "AMD fixes" for Windows Radeon users. Because UE5 is really broken. All they do - enable Vulkan and add bat file with "-vulkan" launch argument.

To be fair, it's not like Mesa has had such a good and reliable and robust caching system over the years either. I've solved multiple bugs and crashes by wiping out a corrupted shader cache in ~/.cache/mesa_shader_cache over the years.
