Moreover, it's high quality, standardized, fixed hardware. That scenario allows for extra optimizations like how console modders, etc are able to squeeze every bit of performance out of a system.

With Catalina being the last version of macOS that doesn't require online activation via Apple's DRM platform, in around 20 years, Linux and BSD may well be the only way to reuse the hardware rather than it going into landfill.

Might as well start now. Then we can enjoy a shedload of cheap second-hand hardware flooding the market once Apple kills the DRM service for that generation of OS. The mac minis can get down to around 7W of power. That is comparable to a recent Raspberry Pi and will be much cheaper.

It's irrelevant if their hardware is the "best" if it's so proprietary that it never works right unless you only play where they allow you and only to do what they allow you to.
That sounds not-fit-for-purpose, and therefore "best" doesn't make sense.

As I said it's very laudable that Alyssa and others are working so hard to keep these things out of the landfill, but we should really stop rewarding Apple for it.

Posts such as these are cringe worthy.

Have some sympathy. Its not his fault. Its what Apple's marketing has told him to think.

I see it as a similar concept to the VAX which OpenBSD still targets. Its not intended to be good. Its just intended to expose bugs as an "exotic" target. Its just a weird aarch64 after all. Nothing that special.

Your comment makes no sense. Kinda the whole point of shoving Linux on it is to increase consumer freedom of their hardware and use it the way we want. Furthermore, Apple makes rather thin profits from hardware; the App Store is their bread and butter. Buying a M series Mac a drop in the bucket for Apple's revenue, especially when you factor in how crazy expensive their chips are. For an ARM-based platform, their dies are quite expensive.
But what about the small improvements done by other Linux-friendly vendors, like Tuxedo, Starlabs, Framework etc... and sent upstream. I would honestly like the world to move away from the obsession with powerful US tech companies.
Yes, what about those other vendors? Phoronix covers those too y'know. Turning a blind eye to your political aversions does more harm than good.
Having said that, don't blame the US for dominating the powerful tech market - had ARM stayed European, I'm sure you'd have changed your tune about Apple, but it ain't ARM's fault they left.

No, it makes perfect sense. Why reward the company that is antithesis to my principles.
I just feel that people get too excited about their shit, and apologises for their behaviour.

PS: It's irrelevant if this is a loss leader or not. I also don't care if it's ARM, X86 RiscV or protein powered (although it would be cool to give my PC food...)

List better ARM laptops. Snapdragon X Elite laptops are still behind.
