With Mesa 18.3 feature development having wrapped up at the end of October, here are some benchmarks showing how the updated RadeonSI and RADV drivers are performing for this code that is now under a feature freeze before its official release around the end of November. AMD Radeon Vega and Polaris graphics cards were tested with a slew of NVIDIA graphics cards also tested on their respective driver to show where the Linux gaming GPU performance is at as we head into the 2018 holiday shopping season.

I remember reading something, that Vega amdgpu support still has room for performance improvements (unlike Polaris which is already quite well optimized), so current Vega radv becnhmarks aren't yet maxed out?

Vega still looks bad on Linux.

vega56 not matching the gtx 1070, and vega 64 not matching the gtx 1080.

Closed source drivers can cheat benchmarks by not drawing everything. This can seen clearly with amdpgu-pro vs. open source Mesa and AMD A8-7600.

So how would you explain the performance difference between AMD on WIndows and Linux? Are they cheating on the Windows benchmarks?

sad to see the 1060 spanking the RX580 by so much, their potential were supposed to be similar

Heh, yeah. These are all really bad numbers considering the costs of these cards, and their lousy power consumption. That said, my Vega 56 is very problem free to use. I can't say that justifies the rather significant performance vs price loss though, which is pretty damn disappointing. Sadly, these cards have been a real flop overall. Navi had better kick ass or open source drivers or no, they just won't be worth it.

Can you link the tests showing AMD-GPU Pro not drawing what is required. Sounds interesting.

Ya the good performance of Polaris on Mesa is in stark contrast to Vega. it could be that there is architecture specific tuning that has not been done for the Linux drivers but has for windows. Or it could be that Vega being a high performance part than Polaris is running into certain bottlenecks which Polaris does not hit as significantly.

really hope they can fix Vega on Linux. And with Navi provide good performance on day 1 itself.

for now the rx 570 and 580 are the best GPUs to recommend for Linux gaming at high quality in 1080p IMO.
