It seems like it probably helps, not sure if that's enough to reverse the performance delta (which I wasn't aware of, by the way).

But are you going to compile mesa, xorg etc to get that? New raspbian is probably over a year away.

I don't think GPU is enabled by default in Raspbian. In spite of all the hype surrounding 3D, for most use cases 2D rendering speed is more important. Unless you are running games.
