    ...why does it require clang? what c++ feature does it use that isn't in gcc?

      If you look at GitHub page, there are instructions for compiling with GCC.

        Because Google AFAIK "deprecated" GCC on Android. Probably where Michael got it from, since Android is Google's beloved junk after all.

        But this project itself looks very interesting though, I'll give them that. Maybe it will compete with game engines in the future.
