This is a very common wrong belief in the opensource community.

The end user has no kind of power, developers do it for their own reasons, which may or may not coincide with "making some freeloaders happy", many programmers do it mostly for fun, not because of greater good or whatever.

If you want to have any kind of power, buy a product, then you have a tiny fraction of entitlement to ask for something.

I see your point, and you are definitely right in some cases. But, I don't think you realized your first sentence also works the other way. Here are some examples of exceptions:
      * There are open-source projects funded by a company, which relates to your last sentence.
      * Some people contribute because they see a need, whether it caters to their interests or not. In other words, charity.
      * Some people might care what others think. After all, if you're making something for the sake of sharing it, what's the point of continuing if nobody likes it? And yes, I do understand I do not by any means represent "everybody".
      * Some people are fond of the idea of communism, or at least socialism. In terms of software, this is a lot less destructive than a government, because it isn't enforced and your well-being doesn't depend on it.

      EDIT:
Regardless, I'm very well aware I have no right to demand a volunteer what to do; that's not what I'm trying to do. I'm just pointing out where the priorities may be skewed, and for the developer (in this case Arlie) to consider what I said as just constructive criticism. In turn, I would hope to see some action taken as a result.

You could very well be right. With a 13-year age difference and a 10+ hour drive away, I didn't know my cousin well enough personally. But even then, a convent is a commitment for life.

Btw, how in the hell can someone be president of more than one university? Is that even legal?
That's one of the perks of private businesses, especially if they're owned under the same umbrella. It is legal, at least in some countries anyway. It's pretty common for someone to be president of multiple businesses, whether they're direct competitors or share no relation to each other at all.

It's also great for advancing opensource AMD graphics, win-win.

I agree. I really desire Nvidia gets so desperate to release their drivers open source...
