The State Of Nouveau; Still Waiting On NVIDIA To Release Firmware
Yeah. If there's going to be a firmware backdoor, it'll be in UEFI since we *know* that has its own network driver and is often bigger than the Linux kernel.
This is one of those cases where treating HW microcode and typical firmware (eg BIOS) interchangeably confuses things. We don't use RAM-based microcode to provide ongoing updates. The only exceptions I am aware of are :
- we updated a few microcode images in order to allow video encode/decode acceleration with open source drivers
- we published an out of date microcode image by accident for some newly supported card (Hawaii ?) and replaced it with the correct one
Again, microcode is a bit of a different case in the sense that (a) it is not usually updated after hardware launch, and (b) everyone seems to prefer having it built permanently into the chip where it can't be updated anyways.
You could at least make it Open-Source so that people could actually see what the microcode is doing.
