The Big Nouveau Rework Will Indeed Land For Linux 4.3

Phoronix: The Big Nouveau Rework Will Indeed Land For Linux 4.3

A few days ago I wrote about the open-source NVIDIA kernel driver going through a big rework and now that code has been queued up into DRM-Next for Linux 4.3...

That's very special but why the hell is there a picture of an obsolete 9800GTX in an ancient system?
Other than the fact that it theoretically shows an Nvidia product, what is the relevance to a story about software updates for the Linux 4.3 Kernel? Do you want me to go to the flea market and take pictures of a Rage 128 for your next AMD graphics driver article?

Then you should compared Rage 128 to Nvidia Riva TNT.

Yes, it's an old stock photo that shows an Nvidia product and one that is capable of running well with nouveau. Users of older nvidia cards are those more likely to use nouveau.

Besides, who really gives a rat's ass? If it bothers you that much, use Adblock or whatever to block the image. Michael's got enough problems without your nitpicking...

I'll switch to nouveau as soon as my 980 will be capable of 3D.

As a person with older cards it's a real pain having to rebuild NVidia stuff every time I rebuild kernel (yes I do that a lot!), and that even breaks every now and again... in fact I don't even know if I can currently use a Quadro4600 with 4.2.rc kernel (didn't build last time I tried).

Presumably you mean the Quadro FX 4600, aka G80. That should work fine with nouveau, although that chip has a number of restrictions that don't exist in the rest of the series, so it's often left behind (it's missing channel sync stuff as well as the ability to have microtiling parameters set on sysmem). However as recently as 4.1 it worked mostly fine (enough for piglit). There are bugs in mesa that are specific to the G80 though... I work on them on and off, but I'm under the assumption that I'm the only person who ever tries to run nouveau on a G80.

i feel your pain. I would love to try gallium-nince with that card but as long as this and the 560 can't be reclocked, it isn't even worth the trouble.

No, no, no. I'm fine without reclocking. At the moment there is no 3D acceleration at all because there is no firmware for it.

                    They fucked up.

Nouveau in Linux 4.3 hangs if you open a window in KDE 5.

Had to install the blob. No more wayland.
