Phoronix: NVIDIA Publishes Open-Source Linux Driver Code For GPU Virtualization "vGPU" Support

NVIDIA engineers have sent out an exciting set of Linux kernel patches for enabling NVIDIA vGPU software support for virtual GPU support among multiple virtual machines (VMs). In aiming for upstream-focused Linux support, this NVIDIA vGPU support is built around the adapted Nouveau driver with the code previously posted for splitting up the Nouveau/NVKM driver components...

GPU SR-IOV is the holy grail everyone's waiting for

.. Sadly this news smells awfully like another feature for wealthy enterprise users

      > The NVIDIA vGPU approach is enterprise-focused

Any hope for consumer Nvidia GPUs here?

Of course not, lol. NVIDIA exists for your money and your money only.

No! No! This doesn’t conform to my narrow view that nvidia is bad and isn’t genuine about going open source!

I doubt it, remeber a lot of stuff was punted into firmware explicitly to prevent what happened with the old gpus

Nvidia conforms to whatever it is that makes them money. I'll eat my hat if this ever trickles down to consumer GPUs.

It will, just give it some GPU generations.

Likely, AMD will put it in consumer GPUs first, which will then add more pressure on Nvidia.

The shiny new are always paid for by the early adopters with deep pockets, which incidentally usually happen to be big corporate buyers. I remember $20,000 Plasma TVs.

I was kind of under the illusion Intel is actually ahead of AMD on sriov in their GPUs.

their igpus had it. not sure if they still do. I think flex gpus have them too. IIRC there was a mod announced to get it working on the consumer dgpus but I dont think anything has materialized thus far.
